This includes OS/software versions, hardware, and usability. I regularly encounter users who may not even know how to tell if their computer has a virus. The computer will be running terribly slow. And the only solution that the user can come up with is that they need a new computer. Maybe I should just start saying, "Yea, he're what I have to offer!" But I'm not that type of person. I just can't bring myself to stoop that low on the totem pole.

Problems usually are related to small programs running in the taskbay area, which usually seem to have at least 1 related service installed. Checking the autostart list in the Start Menu is always the first task. Then, on to checking the registry autostart settings @ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run plus a few others are my next stop. Running through the list of services is next in line to eliminate unneeded programs from taking up valuable memory. Once these tasks are complete, it's on to identifying the real problems in the system.

Cleaning up the temp files and internet cache usually follows. Then examining the system for runaway dll's and system files that are unusual. Then one more check at the running processes to see if any I've killed have returned. If so, then we most likely have a virus or trojan. If not, then we usually just have a few unneeded programs running that are set to not run again.

This process takes about an hour to complete. Afterwards, a system defrag and driver examination are worth a little effort. These steps have alleviated many problems related slow computer systems. This is not a step by step guide, but hopefully you get the point. Your computer needs a little help to continue running efficiently.

If you have any questions about any of the comments posted in my articles, please feel free to contact me @ www.edcgr.com
